NEW YEARS WISHLIST

As the New Year appears inevitably closer as does the end of the month pay-day. Rummaging through shop after shop, laden with gifts bought for family and friends, Christmas shopping can appear a daunting task for the shoe buyers among us. Whilst last month’s pay swiftly sinks down the fashion drain, spent on unnecessary gag gifts in a hasty last minute decision for your distant cousin, the yearning for a pair of ‘New Year’s Party’ heels grows ever more obsessive.
For the majority of us who had piled up presents in the corner of the bedroom- price stickers still attached, inexpertly wrapped following an alcohol incentive late Christmas Eve, a self-congratulation is in order. As a self proclaimed fashion-fanatic my fashion wish list is growing forever longer: from another pair of skinny jeans to a new pink coat courtesy of Zara, one in which any relative of mine will refuse to purchase due to a profuse price tag and a ridiculous option in material for this seasons weather.
And what better way to congratulate yourself for resisting the urge to buy yourself a pair of decadent chandelier earrings you saw when purchasing a nail varnish set for your little sister than splurging your pay packet on these fashion jewels.
Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls – Listed as one of Time magazines ‘25 Best Blogs’, ‘Man Repeller’ is a fun fashion find formatted by witty eccentric Leandra Medine. Making a name for herself as a quirky critic, Medine’s outré style of blending kooky catwalk reporting with comical personal accounts (featuring a vast amount of sexual references) has her followers in stitches. At 23 the fashion enthusiast has just released her first book, a memoir recounting significant recollections from a variety of sartorial choices from crying in Topshops changing room in a sequin blazer and drop crotch pants to throwing up in her dear Grandmas vintage Hermes purse.
A Pink Coat: Add a touch of femininity to your androgynous wardrobe with the unanticipated colour of the season, pink. From baby rose hues to electric magenta the catwalks of AW13 showcased various designers favour of the ultra feminine colour. Injected into the masculine-tailored silhouettes of Celine’s catwalk the shifty shade made for a sophisticated sweetheart who just wants to verify she still reads vogue. Whilst designers such as Louis Vuitton took inspiration from the boudoir recoiling a 50s glamour puss complete in laced silk dresses culling pyjama-esque attire with a satin pink dressing gown.
Leather Dungarees: Play Rihanna this season in fashions raunchy meets rodeo number. Yes, the 90s overalls are back, but with a fashion modification- leather. Whilst the slouchy silhouettes have remained a constant trend over the past year from pale washed denim slacks to floral cotton pinafores see: Alexa chung, the luxe leather suggests an audacious attitude. Pair your leather with a crop top, chunky boots and jewellery resembling some form of weaponry and POW- you’re the ultimate rock chick.

Slipper Shoes: Part loafer part slipper, the slipper shoe is vogues most versatile footwear trend. Branded as the new ballet pump, the slip on slip off support has given heel-haters a helping hand this season. The boudoir influence is at an all time high as Hugh Hefner remains a constant style icon within fashion this year. Although I wouldn’t advise a dressing gown, opt for a classy yet cushy ensemble, think pyjama printed trousers and a fine knit jumper.

SUKI WHO?

Eat your heart out Alexa Chung, Suki is in town. Branded as fashion’s new ‘it’ girl, Suki Waterhouse has usurped Chung’s status as Britain’s style emblem this season. Model, photographer, singer and actor, this covetable chick has strutted into the limelight this year. Scouted at the tender age of 16, Waterhouse has since become renowned for her Brigitte Bardot traits: an oval shaped facial structure, thick pink lips and an eye liner flick Twiggy would be proud of. Modelling in the early days for various designers including Pepe Jeans and Swatch, Suki has since graced the covers of magazines including VOGUE Japan and this month’s ELLE.
French Connection Spring/Summer 2013 “White Lies” Collection  featuring British model Suki Waterhouse.
Currently dating Hangover heart-throb Bradley Cooper, Suki is no stranger to aesthetically-pleasing males. After breaking up in 2011 with The Kooks front man, curly-haired, skinny jean, ostensibly ‘indie’ Luke Pritchard, Suki opted for a Mr Miles Kane. A Liverpudlian who channels a certain Beatles-esque quality with his prominent bowl-cut, Miles’ on-stage attire includes suit after suit after suit (and the occasional leather jacket). Whilst the ex-band-boyfriend list grows forever longer, Suki is frequently pictured with best friend since netball class aged 11, gap-toothed Georgia Jagger and bushy-browed-beauty, supermodel Cara Delevigne so it is safe to say Waterhouse is certainly remaining within the celebrity status and un-doubtfully in fashions best dressed list.
Suki’s sartorial statements translate a tone akin to her 60s signature facial characteristics. Influenced by various icons throughout the era, Suki’s modette inspired mode has developed a new trend for the fashion look books. With her love for playing dress-up, the model tends to mix, match and mash a variety of ensembles. Her eminent NME awards 2012 outfit saw her sporting a baby pink tailored blazer and matching shorts, white tights and patent white Chelsea boots. Her ‘Global Fashion Awards 2012’ outfit, on the other hand, showcased a gothic leather meets lace mini dress with an attached veil-type sheer skirt underneath a PVC cropped leather jacket. Her capability to remain fashionable yet add her own tantalising twist has landed her a fashion status favourable within the ‘quirky girl’ clique (others including: Paloma Faith and Florence Welsh.)
Rarely spotted without an accessory from her ambry which ranges from round John Lennon sunglasses to vintage Chanel purses to a corduroy paper-boy hat covering a dirty blonde full fringe, Suki’s day time looks are easy to achieve with a little jumble of your wardrobe.

WINTER WOES? NO WORRIES

I’m ever so dubious regarding winter shoes. Is it unnecessary to invest in every ‘key footwear trend’ rather than devote yourself to one simple, sophisticated yet hard wearing boot ready to brave whatever fashion winds may be ahead? This year I opted for the former as fashion woes set in towards the end of September knowing the strappy gladiator heels were a no-go, as were the satin peep-toes as Mother Fashion started to channel some chills.

My shoe cupboard (that’s the shoe boxes piled up in the corner of my bedroom) currently consists of 7 winter shoes – ones I regard as ‘winter’ shoes anyway. However, my payday wish list includes a variety of covetable accessories, from Gucci’s python print knee boots to the rubber sole ‘monster’ creepers on the Gaga catwalks of Stella McCartney. Considering this is a ‘wish list’ however, with the abundance of exquisite yet expensive trends hitting the fashion catwalk, here is a simple seasonal summary of wearable wing-tips for your wardrobe this winter.

CUT OUT BOOTS – Recently nominated ‘the most annoying shoe of the season’ are the cult cut out boots. Owned and donned on every female, even those remotely interested in the latest vogue, the cut out boot is likely to be thrown into the boutique bin as quickly as you can say ‘wedged trainer’. However for now, the androgynous grunge-for-girls 90s redux is still at an all time fashion-high and we just can’t get enough. Inspired by the Balenciaga Boot of SS11, high street stores from Topshop to River Island have immersed themselves within the ankle adorning trend. Victorian notions have set sail as flesh revealed beneath the bondage strap buckles connote a rebellious streak. Paired with petite sartorial wear for an oppositional yet purposeful point these chunky chic’s imply a suggestible sex-kitten who can pull anything off

KNEE HIGH BOOTS – Embrace your inner Julia Roberts. Any mention of my fervour for knee-high-boots instantly conjures a ‘Pretty Woman’ scene of a certain red-haired Vivian Ward strutting down Rodeo Drive into people’s minds. Look, I say, the closest you’ll ever be to lycra is wet-look leggings and I am in no state of fashion mind to even attempt hooker elegance since I’m not Rihanna and I’m only verging on 5ft 4. Take the boot in suede, knee high, flat and pair it with a mini skirt – flared. Wall-ah. Wearing a tight-ass skirt will ruin the sophisticated illusion, as would a maxi skirt (that’s for the hippy-folk.) Flared is suggestible yet sweet, pulling of a swinging sixties vibe, knee-highs are similar to the cut out boots, revealing minimum flesh for that suggestive concept.

CHELSEA BOOTS – With androgynous accents and mod influences, the Chelsea boot is a British babe exclusively for British babes. Alexa Chung, the human showcase of fashion trends is notably a Chelsea boot hoarder donning the elasticated shoe in a variety of different materials, shapes and (heel) sizes. Designed purposefully for the slip on/slip off function, the stretchy boot asserts an ‘I’m too à la mode for laces’ statement. From leather to suede, brogue detailing to a pointed toe, stiletto heeled to a platform sole, funky leopard print to a modette white leather; sported with a ripped skinny jean, your favourite bands t-shirt (note: not one direction) and a fur coat, this off-duty model vibe is a practical point towards the fashion world.

GUNK

CATWALK TO SIDE WALK- “GUNK”
Remember AW11? A walking gimp down the runways of Alexander McQueen; leather body harnesses attached to buckled chokers adjusted to lean necks suspended to the gaunt frames of McQueen models. Leather met latex, risqué met raunchy and a provocative power was unleashed as the bondage boutique range hit the erotic catwalks. Whilst a minority of fashionistas freaked the majority of us females failed, seeking a few studs here and there and a new belt reformed into a choker necklace in an attempt to gesture at least some sign of masochism.

This season seeks a more humble homage to the evocative escapades of fashion’s previous catwalks: ‘GUNK’ (that’s grunge meets punk.) Nonetheless fashion’s shameful endeavour to suppress sex has met blurred lines with its material of the season: tartan, either loved for its granny heritage or infamous for its slut shaming tendencies. Dismissing the various branded attachments to the plaid print however, whips stripped and cigarettes chewed and so forth, this skittish trend has somehow managed to maintain a minute form of maturity.

Various interpretations have been incorporated into the gunk trend , whether it’s the Yves Saint Laurent seasonal collection with its checked tea dresses, covering tattoos in a naïve attempt to look cute or Versace’s glam, punk catwalk hinting at a 30-something cougar mum, GUNK is an on growing evolving trend within the fashion industry. Whether constructing a simple or excessive statement, the subversive streak is key to any punk inspired outfit.

As plaid proposes itself the official mascot to this Winter’s whimsical wind, check cliques have formed as fashion bloggers around the fashion planet have instagram’d, tweet’d and tumbl’d their lavish love for the print. A tartan flannel tucked into a high waist skinny jean, a pleated plaid skirt teamed with a crisp white shirt ensemble or a loose fit check pinafore consciously sported with chunky cut-out boots. How will you channel your inner Nirvana?
